I was watching a NHK TV programe about

a man who once was a Japanese soilder.

He is about 94 and still doing something

for the lost soilders in New Giunea after

the second world war. I think you know

who he is; yes, Mr. Nishioka, who is called

Bone Man.

He has been collecting the bones of the lost

Japanese soilders for 26 years. He is doing

so because he promised his friend soelders

that he would come back there and collect

their bones. It is a touching story.

And suddenly "Our Peter Williams" appear-

ed on TV in a smart suit.

He looks great.unlike the Peter we knew,

wearing short pants and drinking a lot of

beer here in Japan.

We were so happy to see him again

unexpectedly. I 'm sure he is doing a good job.

今日TVを見ていたら、遺骨を26年間収集している

元日本兵の話のなかに、突然、われらのピーター・ウイリアムズ

が、オーストラリアの側の代表として出ていました。

ほんの、短い場面でしたが、彼は偉い政府の役人になったいる

ようです。彼は、リトルの初期に、中津で先生として、

その頃から、歴史、特に戦史の専門家となり、博士号も取ったと

聞いています。みんながやっている、暗記構文やフロウン単語

のナレーションをやってくれました。英語の面でも随分助けて

もらいました。

好きなことを、長いことやれば、彼のようなチャンスがある

ということですね。素晴らしい友人を持って、私たちも誇りに思います。
